Two Days in Yogyakarta

Finally I did a motorbike-ride again from Surabaya to Yogyakarta since April 2016, and I did it alone this time. On Saturday, October 6th 2018, the adventure began around 01.00 AM when I started to turn my bike on. The roadway to Central Java province is more bumpy/uneven compared to the road to Banyuwangi direction because it’s often traversed by trucks and buses. And also, the cold night-breeze really went through my jacket so that I couldn't speed too much. After all, there is no point in being rushed, the most important thing is to arrive safely.

Around 09.00 AM, I finally arrived in Yogyakarta. I made an appointment to meet Obie (my friend from JUMPalitan Yogyakarta Parkour) in Indomaret (Indonesian mini market) at Pramuka street area. After eating breakfast together, we stopped by Bayu's house to chill out and rested for a while.

Then, about 03.00 PM, we headed immediately to Gadjah Mada University for afternoon jamming session. There had been some JUMPalitan crews who were warming up at the front yard of GSP building (inside the campus area). Just info, this jamming session wasn’t just ordinary jamming, because there would be some Parkour Veteran practitioners who’d like to join the training (kinda like informal-reunion-jamming). And I was willing to do solo-motorbiking from Surabaya to Yogyakarta for the sake of this moment. The 'Parkour Veteran' term is just a funny-term for any early generation a.k.a. senior practitioners of Parkour Indonesia. Some of them have been married and have children, but still dedicating their spare time to train parkour.

Some of Parkour Veteran members who joined the jamming were Bruce, Brex, Qory, Mamat, Reza, Catur, and Hamy. We trained as much as we like until sunset time. By the night, we continued doing flip training in B-13 indoor gym. I just did a simple training because I’m not really good at flipping actually. I must admit that I felt a little bit inferior to the others because my skill isn’t as great as them, and also my progress is quite slow. However, of course it shouldn’t daunt my training spirit. Apart from that, our togetherness and brotherhood are far more important than just showing off skills.

After finishing the gym session; Bayu, Obie, Zaki, and I hung around at coffee shop until ±11.00 PM, then I spent that night by resting in Bayu's house.

Day 2 in Yogyakarta; Obie, Bayu, and I started the day by swimming in Tirtasari Pool, at Kaliurang area. Because it was Sunday morning, the swimming pool was definitely quite crowded so that we couldn’t do flip training freely. But, it's not a big deal, overall the swimming session was quite fun.

Around 03.00 PM in the afternoon, everyone gathered in Indonesian Islamic University for another parkour jamming session. Unfortunately, some of the usual training spots were being used by the rock climbing community, and some other areas were installed by rigging stage for a music event, so we only could train at limited spots area. But no matter what happened, the jamming had to be continued.

We ended this jamming session by the sunset, then we split and said goodbye to each other. Before returning to Surabaya, there was one more thing to do, I had to visit Yuda Andre. He is one of the early generations of JUMPalitan who had already moved to Spain. And that day, while he was in Yogyakarta, of course I didn't want to miss the chance to meet him. Together with Bruce, Brex, and Mamat; the four of us immediately headed to his house.

Finally, around 8.00 PM, I said goodbye to everyone then going back to Surabaya. Honestly, I still wanted to stay 1-2 more days in Yogyakarta, but due to the urgent thing that I had to do on the following day, I decided to go home that night.

After ±8.5 hours exhausting motorbike ride, thankfully I could arrive safely in Surabaya around 04.30 AM on Monday. Two days in Yogyakarta is not enough actually, hope there will be another chance to visit and explore this beautiful city in the future.
