First Yogyakarta Monthly Jam, April 10th 2016

How does it feel not sleep all night and have a ±325 km motorcycles riding at dawn? Exciting, tense, and tired all mixed into one. That’s what I did on last Saturday with Andreas, Rijalul, and Yoga. The four of us set out with 2 bikes, I gave a ride to Rijalul, while Andreas gave one to Yoga. We went from Surabaya ±at 02.00 AM because the road was still quiet at that time, so we could shorten the travel time.

We could go fast enough with our bike during the trip (±60-80 km/hour), because there were only a few buses and trucks at that time. There was only one prohibition that shouldn’t happen (and thankfully it didn’t), that was THE SLEEPINESS. Maybe the strong night breeze made us keep stay awake all night, and also made me & Andreas driving more enthusiastically. We overtook trucks, buses, and other vehicles one by one carefully.

Finally the sun was rising and we started to enter Central Java province. The number of vehicles had also increased along with the beginning of people activities. We arrived at Solo (Surakarta) ±at 08.00 AM and had some breakfast there. After ±30-40 minutes rest and refuel our motorcycles, we continued our trip to Yogyakarta.

After a ±2 hour bike ride from Solo, at last we arrived in Yogyakarta. Our entire faces and bodies were messed up, plus we also had black-panda-eyes due to the sleepless night, we were completely tired at that time. The four of us decided to stop by Feikal’s boarding house to take a shower and sleep for a while to restore our strength. Then from afternoon to night we spent time in Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) and an indoor gym. Previously we wanted to do a parkour jam with some Yogyakarta friends in UII, but due to the heavy rain, we could just chilling around and talk to each other until the rain stopped. After that we continued to the gym for flip training. Although we were very tired physically, but our heart and mind was really enthusiastic, because there would be a Yogyakarta First Monthly Jam on the next day.

On Sunday morning, all the monthly jam participants had gathered in Taman Sari area at 8 o’clock. The total participants themselves were probably around 15-20 people. There were 6 people from Parkour Surabaya because Putra and Dimas also joined us by bus. Then there were several people from Spartarun Parkour Solo besides the host JUMPalitan Parkour Yogyakarta. We had a great jam at the ruins of Taman Sari until noon, and then continued to another spot in Institut Seni Indonesia. Around 02.00 PM the jamming had just ended because all the participants were tired and hungry. Later, after eating lunch, the Spartarun guys decided to go back to Solo, while the remaining participants continued to swim in Blue Lagoon water spring.

Around sunset, all the Surabaya guys gathered and rested in Feikal’s boarding house until night. Then around 11.00 PM we hanged out to a random coffee stall under the Janti street flyover while Putra and Dimas were waiting for the night bus to Surabaya. And around 01.30 AM on Monday; Andreas, Yoga, Rijalul, and I decided to go back immediately to Surabaya. We felt that this return trip took shorter time than the departure one, because there were almost no trucks and buses at this hour. Later, around 05.30 AM we took a rest for a while in a mosque at Jombang while Yoga and Rijalul did an early morning prayer. And finally, we arrived safely in Surabaya ±at 09.00 AM, then Andreas and I split up to take Yoga and Rijalul to their own homes.

Although only a 2-days-trip, but it was a memorable experience for me (and of course exhausting). Besides exploring great parkour spots in Yogyakarta, I was grateful for making new friends from Spartarun Parkour Solo. Who knows I can make a longer trip to Solo in the future. And this was also my first long-distance-motorcycle-trip experience, very tiring, but also a lot of fun. Hopefully I can do this kind of adventure more often in the future.
